Hostages Forum to PM: Focus on Releasing the Hostages, Not Rescuing Them

The difference between a military operation and a diplomatic deal, the forum said, “for the hostages could be the difference between salvation and loss”

At a meeting with leaders from the Shin Bet yesterday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the victory against Iran had opened up new opportunities to rescue the hostages still in Gaza. “Of course, we will also need to resolve the issue of Gaza, to defeat Hamas, but I estimate that we will achieve both tasks,” the prime minister said.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum responded yesterday to Netanyahu’s statement. “It is important to emphasize that what is required is ‘release,’ not ‘rescue.’ A difference of a word, which for the hostages could be the difference between salvation and loss,” the forum said, emphasizing the importance of achieving a deal to return the all hostages rather than returning individual hostages through dangerous military operations.

“The families of the hostages welcome the fact that after 20 months, the return of the hostages has finally been set as the prime minister’s top goal. This is a very important statement, from which a single-phase deal must follow—to return all 50 hostages and the hostage and to end the fighting in Gaza,” the group added.
