Worker Drowns in Cesspit in Israel’s 66th Deadly Work Accident This Year

The worker’s death, along with 17 incidents of nondeadly workplace accidents in the previous week, underscored the importance of workplace safety

On Sunday, an employee working near Kibbutz Lohamei HaGetaot in northern Israel was killed when he fell into a cesspit around 20 feet deep and drowned. His death marks the 66th death in  a work accident so far this year.

“We saw a 64-year-old man who was unconscious after falling into a cesspit,” Amod Dadon, a Magen David Adom paramedic, said. “We carried out a complex rescue operation together with the fire department, at the end of which we were sadly forced to declare the worker’s death by drowning.”

In the week leading up to the man’s death, 17 workers were injured in work accidents.

On Sunday, December 1, a 48-year-old construction worker was moderately injured after a fall at a work site in Yokneam Illit. Two workers around 35 years old were injured in a scaffolding collapse in Hod HaSharon. One received moderate injuries and the other was lightly injured.

Three workers were injured on Monday, December 2. One 63-year-old worker fell from a truck in Petah Tikva and received a moderate head injury. A 48-year-old worker was moderately injured when he fell at a worksite in Tel Aviv, and a 26-year-old worker was moderately injured when he fell about 10 feet in a factory in Karmiel.

On Tuesday, December 3, two workers around 30 years old received a second-degree electric shock during the course of their work in Ramle. A 37-year-old worker was burned by tar while working at a factory in Ashdod, receiving moderate injuries. In Bat Yam, a worker around 60 years old lost three of his fingers while operating a circular saw.

Wednesday, December 4 marked the most dangerous day of the previous week, with six workers receiving injuries. Two workers around 55 years old fell off a crane in the Druze village of Yarka, with one heavily injured and one moderately injured. A 53-year-old construction worker in Afula fell more than 15 feet, receiving moderate injuries.

That same day, a worker around 40 years old was moderately injured while performing roadwork in Ramle, and two workers in Be’er Sheva around 35 years old were lightly injured by the fall of scaffolding used for window washing.

On Thursday, December 5, a 28-year-old worker was heavily injured after falling from a ladder while performing renovations in Rishon LeZion.
