Hundreds of migrant workers employed in the construction, agriculture, caregiving, hospitality, and food service sectors attended an appreciation event recognizing their contribution to Israel's economy and their support for the country during the war. The event was held at the Histadrut headquarters in Tel Aviv and was attended by workers from China, India, Thailand, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka.
Gershon Gelman, head of the Histadrut's International Relations Division and the official responsible for labor recruitment agencies within the organization, welcomed the workers and presented the Histadrut's activities.
"For more than 40 years, migrant workers have come to Israel to help strengthen its economy. We deeply appreciate everything you do. You build our homes, sustain our agriculture, care for 70,000 elderly people across Israel, and contribute to the growth of the Israeli economy."
Gelman also referred to the Swords of Iron War and the military operations against Iran, during which migrant workers were among those killed and taken hostage. "Most of you chose to stay here with us rather than leave despite these difficult times. That is not something we take for granted, and I salute you and deeply appreciate your commitment," he said.
Gelman also emphasized that since 2001, the Histadrut has opened its doors to migrant workers and has worked to protect their rights through sectoral collective agreements and individual assistance.
"The Histadrut, which represents more than 800,000 workers, is the largest and strongest labor organization in Israel, and we are here for whatever you need. To anyone who is not receiving the rights they are entitled to from their employer, I promise that we will help you obtain those rights, just as we do for Israeli workers," he said.
Also attending the event were Rom Dvir, chair of the Union of Hotel, Agriculture, and Chemical Workers, along with representatives of the Construction Workers' Union and the Security, Cleaning, and Care Workers' Union.
Following the ceremony, the workers were treated to a festive meal on the rooftop of the Histadrut headquarters and received gifts, as well as informational leaflets containing the Histadrut's service center contact details in English, Chinese, and Hindi.
"You are our ambassadors in your home countries. You tell our story to your families and communities. You are our partners, working alongside us hand in hand. I thank you, I salute you, and I offer you the services of the Histadrut," Gelman concluded.
