Protesters identified with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demonstrated last night (Sunday) outside the home of the chairman of the centrist Yashar party, Knesset Member Gadi Eisenkot, in protest of the possibility that a government headed by him would be formed that would rely on the support of the Arab parties. The demonstration took place against the backdrop of talks to form a new government following the elections, held on October 27. During the demonstration, one of the participants shouted at Eisenkot through a megaphone: “You murdered your son, traitor!” and other protesters joined the shouts of “traitor.” Eisenkot’s son, Master Sgt. (res.) Gal Meir Eisenkot, fell in battle in Gaza in December 2023.
Among the participants were members of bereaved families from the Law and Justice Forum, which was established, among other reasons, to oppose the creation of a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 massacre and to promote an alternative commission of inquiry. Several figures in the Likud party are involved in the forum’s activity. According to reports, far-right activists Viktor Shriki and Roi Star, who have been linked in the past to provocations and public disorder at public events, also took part in the demonstration.
The HaGvura Forum said that its members did not officially take part in the demonstration.
The Yashar party said in response: “The pathetic attack outside the home of party chairman Gadi Eisenkot is a direct result of a rotten, unrestrained political leadership that has erased the red lines in order to cling to its seat. This is what losing one’s way looks like.”
The party added: “This is the spirit emanating from Netanyahu’s office, and it is further proof of the immediate obligation to replace his government as soon as possible, for the sake of the State of Israel and Israeli society. At this stage, there is not even an expectation of condemnation. The shame is all yours.”
The chairman of the left-wing Democrats party, Yair Golan, condemned the demonstration and wrote on X: “The people of Netanyahu’s poison machine came to my partner’s home and shouted at him that he murdered his son. This is the poison that Netanyahu and his people spread. There is no limit they will not cross and no depths to which they will not sink. This is the Netanyahu legacy, the only policy that will be remembered that he left behind.”
Former prime minister Yair Lapid also condemned the demonstration outside Eisenkot’s home and wrote: “Sending strength and hugs to Gadi and his family. Who are these people? What is Jewish about them? What is Israeli about them? How did a sick leadership manage to make them hate this way? We have to set Israel on a new path, and that is what we will do.”
